The Truth about Barbie You Create Kit

Hey Curvy Barbie lovers,

I believe the Barbie You Create Kit was designed for influencers, not for us real collectors.

The kit costs around US$100 (even more after taxes in some countries). It comes with 3 articulated bodies, 3 bald heads, 3 wigs with silicone caps, and stretch clothes. In theory, it sounds good for customizers… but in practice?

Why it seems made for influencers:

Easy and fast content: An influencer receives the kit for free or at a big discount, does a quick unboxing, swaps wigs and heads in 5 minutes, takes pretty photos or films a short video saying “Look at all the looks I created!” and posts it. That generates a lot of views and buzz.

Massive reach: One influencer with 100K followers can promote the doll way more effectively than hundreds of collectors posting in closed groups.

Praise even if it’s not good: Even if the wigs are awful, the dolls themselves are full of flaws — weird eyes, shoes that don’t fit, etc. — influencers will still say mostly nice things because they want to keep a good relationship with Mattel.

Mattel knows this very well. Influencer marketing is what really moves the brand today.

The Voice of Real Collectors

The sad part is that true collectors — the ones who buy multiple dolls, repaint faces, do professional rerooting, and really care about quality — have almost no voice.

We complain about the high price, the mediocre quality, and the fact that it feels more like a “content kit” than a serious customization tool. But our opinions rarely influence Mattel’s decisions.

Mattel is a big company. They need to sell products and create hype. Influencers with huge followings help them do that much faster than listening to a small group of dedicated collectors.

At the end of the day, Mattel can push whatever doll they want, and as long as influencers hype it up, it will sell.

What do you think? Have you bought the You Create kit? Was the price or the wig quality your biggest issue?

  1. Ich habe nur die normalen Basics gekauft. Die blonde mit Locken schielt und die Kleidung der Puppen ist sehr minderwertig und hat null Style. Die Puppen selbst finde ich sehr hübsch.

  2. I love the kits! I am not an influencer, just a collector. I love being able to swap out the bodies and wigs. Maybe I have been lucky with my wigs, but they have all been very good. I do like some more than others. I love the little bob from this release and the long brunette one.

I wish that they would do some fashion packs.

    They ARE expensive.
